|  Objective: Mammography is the only proven modality to reduce mortality of breast cancer and has been shown to reduce mortality from breast cancer, and ultrasonography is a well-known adjunct to screening mammography. BI-RADS classification is actually practical and correlation with histopathology on the palpable diagnostic cases. This work aims to investigate the relationship between vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) expression and different grades of BI-RADS in Breast cancer.
Methods: Ninety-six breast carcinomas patients were evaluated by BI-RADS using ultrasonography, mammography alone, and combined, respectively. In the combined imaging assessment, BI-RADS 1-4a category wasultrasonography and mammographyy both no more than 4a, however, 4b-5a cacategory was considered as the score of ultrasonography and mammography both more than 4a. Immunhistochemical Ultra SensitiveTM S-P method was employed to detect the expression of VEGF in 96 cases. Fifty cases of benign breast disease patients were selected as a control group. The relationship between VEGF expression and different grades of BI-RADS was analyzed, as well as the relationship between the expression VEGF with other standard prognostic parameters associated with invasive breast cancer, such as size, grade, stage of the cancer and metastases.
Results: The sensitivity of ultrasonography, mammography alone was74.0% and 84.4 %, respectly; however, the sensitivity in combination was improved into 90.6%. The positive rates of VEGF in invasive breast cancer BI-RADS 4b-5 (59/87, 67.8%) were higher than that in BI-RADS 4a (3/9, 33.3%, P<0.05) and benign breast disease tissues (BI-RADS 1-4a, 11/50, 22.0%) ( P<0.05, respectly ). There was posive correlation in over-expression of VEGF with BI-RADS 4b-5, histological grade( III), lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis of invasive breast cancer, and the expressions of VEGF was not related with age and size of tumor for each group(P>0.05).
Conclusions: There was posive correlation in over-expression of VEGF with BI-RADS 4b-5. The over-expression of VEGF might be important biological markers for invasion and metastasis of breast cancer. |
